Vertrutting at the top? For some, the cuddly penis at the Alkmaar fair is something to swallow

Suddenly he was there at the fair in Alkmaar: the huge penis hug. Whether it’s catching rubber ducks or the camel race, you can win it at just about every stall. Not everyone is happy with that: the local branch of the Christian Union wants to ban the hug. But what does the fairgoer himself think? NH reporter Rosanne van Veen went to investigate.

At the fair in Alkmaar, everyone is actually positive about the penis hug. “If even that is no longer possible…” is a common response. Parents don’t mind at all that their children go off the fair with a hug from the male genitals. Fairground operator Hans van Tool is very happy with the new craze. “It’s abnormal at the fair. It’s the best article, everyone wants it.”

But why is the penis hug so popular?

Social scientist at Utrecht University Linda Duitsland tries to explain the popularity of the penis hug. It is very logical that it is so popular right now, because it is new to the fair. “People just find that very funny, just like penis balloons and penis diadems. It’s just fun underpants. Children also find that funny and they also look funny because of the face. And: the more fuss, the more popular.”

No trend

She does not think that the rise of the penis hug can be linked to a social trend. “In Amsterdam, for example, you have many bags or sweaters with a vulva on them. You could see that as a form of emancipation and feminism.” The dick hug is no counterpart to that. “It is always visible. The penis does not have to make an emancipation battle.”

Would there be just as much fuss if there were also huge hugs of vulvas available at the fair? “I don’t think so, just because far fewer people recognize it. Every eight-year-old knows how to draw a penis, but not how to draw a vulva.”

That the ChristenUnie in Alkmaar wants to ban penis hugs because they would be harmful to children, German thinks is nonsense. “Half of the world’s population has one. It is also not a form of sexualization, because the hugs are not sexually charged. They look funny. They are rather cheerful and droll.”
