Minister of Asylum and Migration David van Weel has terminated the decision and departure moratorium that since November 14, 2024, for the whole of Lebanon, applied. The IND can now handle asylum applications from people from that country again.

For three regions-South, Nabatiye and Baalbek-Hermel-there is still violence in the context of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. However, the available information shows that it is a relatively low level of random violence, often aimed at military goals such as Hezbollah positions.

“That means that people from these areas are not automatically eligible for protection,” says Van Weel. “As with all asylum applications: the IND assesses per person whether there is a real risk. Only those who can prove that he or she is individual danger is eligible for protection.”

In the rest of Lebanon there is no random violence due to an armed conflict. There too, applications are assessed individually, based on the personal situation of the applicant.

With the termination of the moratorium, clarity comes for asylum seekers whose application was previously arrested. At the same time, it contributes to reducing the pressure on the reception capacity, because the asylum chain starts moving again.
