Due to the international top, the Dutch government has taken extra safety measures. One of those measures is a so-called ‘no-fly zone’ for small aviation in a circle of 93 kilometers around The Hague. That zone is so large that Hilversum and Middenmeer also fall under it. Only a few exceptions, such as government flights, are still allowed to fly.
Hilversum completely closed, Middenmeer does maintenance
Hilversum airport closes its doors all those days. “That means that nobody is allowed to fly and the harbor masters are not there either,” said Vincent Kager of the airport. The rules have already been announced, so that pilots can take it into account.
Middenmeer airport is also in the forbidden area. There they take the opportunity to do maintenance on the runway.
Extra crowds at Schiphol
The largest airport in our country, Schiphol, is not locked. The airport is the arrival and starting point of many government leaders, ministers and delegation members who travel to the top. The Polderbaan will be completely reserved for government aircraft from 21 June to 27 June.
The Buitenveldertbaan is also out of use for maintenance. That means that other jobs are used more. Passengers must therefore take into account extra crowds and local residents in some parts of the region may experience more burden.
Stricter rules
The NATO summit is a large international event that attracts many world leaders. To steer everything in the right direction, there is also temporarily stricter control of air traffic control in the rest of the country. Even outside the forbidden zone, pilots must request approval for their route in advance.
