‘Van ‘t Schip in talks with Ajax to succeed Maurice Steijn’

John van ‘t Schip is in talks with Ajax to succeed Maurice Steijn as head coach. The former player of the club confirmed this to the NOS.

The broadcaster reports that it is still unclear whether this is a temporary or long-term employment contract. After Ajax announced yesterday that it would not continue with Steijn, the club is currently without a head coach.

Van ‘t Schip played 347 matches for Ajax between 1982 and 1992. After his playing career, he returned as trainer of Jong Ajax and later became an assistant under Marco van Basten and Martin Jol.

Coaching career

After Van Basten’s dismissal in 2009, he also served as interim coach for one match. As head coach, Van ‘t Schip worked at FC Twente and PEC Zwolle, among others. His last job was coaching the national team of Greece, where he left in 2021.

Earlier this month it was announced that Van ‘t Schip would be joining Ajax for a position on the club’s board.
