She passed away in Rome, at the age of 76 years old, Valeria Fedeli. The news of the death of the former Minister of Education and former trade union leader was communicated this morning by her family. During his long career, Fedeli has crossed the world of work, trade unions and institutions, covering leading roles in the country’s public life. Born in Treviglio in 1949, in the province of Bergamo, he began his professional career in the trade union, joining the CGIL and becoming a reference figure over time. Within the organization he had held top positions, eventually leading the company Filtea-Cgilthe federation representing workers in the textile, clothing, leather and footwear sectors. In the 2012 had been nominated vice president Of Consumer Federation.

In the 2013 Fedeli had left trade union activity to run in the political elections with the Democratic Party. Elected to the Senate, she assumed the role of vice-president of the Palazzo Madama Assembly. Between January and February 2015 he temporarily presided over the Senate, taking over from Pietro Grasso during the period in which the latter was called upon to carry out the functions of President of the Republic.

Minister of Education

In 2016 she joined the government led by Paolo Gentiloniassuming the role of Minister of Education, University and Research. A role she maintained until the end of the legislature, in 2018. In the same year she was re-elected in the Senate, while she was not re-nominated in the 2022 general elections.

Civil commitment

Alongside his institutional activity, Fedeli had carried out a constant commitment to the issues of gender equality. She was among the promoters of the “If not now, when?” committee, created to counter considered representations discrimination against women in public life and in the media. In 2018 she joined the board of directors of Giovanni Agnelli Foundation. Valeria Fedeli lived in Rome and was married to Achille Passoni, a former union leader and former commissioner of the Democratic Party in Sardinia.
