User opinion HSV: The best squad since joining the second division

Fan series for the 2nd league

With the help of the community, Transfermarkt will take a detailed look at the 56 teams in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2 and Bundesliga 3 in the coming weeks. Which players are the fans looking forward to the most, where is there room for improvement and what is in the squad for 2022/23 for your favorite club? For this we asked around in the forums and picked up assessments – in league two we continue with user “7zidan7” and Hamburger SV.

How do you rate the Hamburger SV squad?

Last season, HSV played the best second division season since relegation in 2018 in terms of points, goal difference and table placement. A bitter but deserved defeat in the relegation second leg against Hertha BSC prevented a return to the top flight – but ensured that the permanent staff stayed. Especially in the final phase of last season, an enormous team spirit developed, which HSV hasn’t had in this form for a long time. The whereabouts of talented defender Mario Vuskovic, free spirit Sonny Kittel and top scorer Robert Glatzel, all of whom have sparked the interest of top division clubs from home and abroad, provide joy and hope.

In addition, the committed Lászlo Bénes and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer already indicated in the tests that they can represent the desired selective reinforcements. Left winger Filip Bilbija and goalkeeper Matheo Raab are supposed to fuel the competition. In addition, Xavier Amaechi and Aaron Opoku, who returned on loan, presented themselves as the hoped-for alternatives for which they were once planned in the professional squad. Overall, the squad can be assessed as the most homogeneous and qualitatively best in Hamburg’s second division history.

Where do you still see a need for improvement before Deadline Day?

One of the biggest questions in the Hamburg area is definitely: What happens if Glatzel were to fail in the long term? With Königsdörffer and Robin Meißner there are two strikers in the squad who could hold this position. Königsdörffer’s profile doesn’t fit the center forward position of the Walter system. Meißner is not yet believed capable of this task; here is also a loan in the room. The solution could be Bartosz Bialek: The Wolfsburg player urgently needs game practice and is unlikely to get it from Lower Saxony. If no one is interested from the 1st league, a loan to HSV is apparently conceivable.

In addition, the name Joel Pohjanpalo keeps haunting Hamburg. The Finn, who has already played for HSV on loan, is said to be in constant contact with sports director Jonas Boldt. The Hamburgers are also keeping their eyes open when it comes to reinforcements for the wing positions: Bilbija, a talented player, came from relegated Ingolstadt, but they would still like to present another name. In this context, the transfer of Hajduk Split’s Emir Sahiti fell through because the transfer fee was too high. In addition, it quickly became quiet again about Jean-Luc Dompé (Zulte-Waregem), who had been hotly traded in the meantime. Due to the departure of Josha Vagnoman, a right-back is also missing from the squad: Moritz Heyer is unrivaled here; Junior player Bent Andresen is far from ready to be able to replace him in case of doubt.

What do you expect from the playful appearance of the team?

It is to be expected that a similarly entertaining game behavior, which has long since become known beyond the borders of the second division under the term “Walter-Ball”, will accompany HSV throughout the season. Coach Tim Walter continues to rely on a 4-3-3 system with opening of the game from the defensive, a creative and dominant midfield, strong running wing play and the accurate Glatzel. The risky style of play, to solve the situation playfully on the defensive when winning the ball, should be optimized in order to prevent simple goals. It is beneficial that the HSV axis Heuer Fernandes-Schonlau-Meffert-Glatzel, which has internalized the core of the “Walter Ball”, stays together.

What’s in store for Hamburger SV in 2022/23?

For the first time since relegation in 2018, HSV has announced promotion as an official goal. After the appealing season finale with the bitter final chord in the relegation, everything else is no longer for sale. In addition, continuity seems to have finally arrived at the Volksparkstadion: Coach Walter is still at the helm and his key players are staying on board. With Bénes and Königsdörffer, two selective reinforcements were added, which again increase the quality of HSV. If the axis around Jonas Meffert and Glatzel stays fit and the executive floor finally shows calm and unity, a place among the top two teams in the 2nd division should be realistic.
