US was in contact with Moscow about Biden’s visit to Kiev | Abroad

Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday to personally express his solidarity. He spoke with President Volodymyr Zelensky about the war and Kiev’s energy and infrastructure needs. Economic and humanitarian support were also discussed. Zelensky called the talks “very fruitful”.

The visit was planned quickly and secretly and was not revealed until arrival. White House spokesmen had denied last week that such a visit would take place ahead of Biden’s visit to Poland.

Biden announced a new half-billion-dollar weapons package in Kiev, on top of the more than $50 billion the US has already given to Ukraine over the past year. The president traveled to Poland early in the afternoon on Monday, where he had also taken the train to Kiev for security reasons.
