Up to 800,000 euros fine and five years in prison: stricter sentences for animal abuse unanimously approved

The Flemish Parliament has unanimously given the green light for higher fines and longer prison sentences for animal cruelty. The decree of Minister of Animal Welfare Ben Weyts (N-VA) provides that from now on animal executioners can receive up to 5 years in prison. In the case of recidivism, this even increases to 10 years. According to Minister Weyts, the decree is “the final piece for a firm animal welfare policy”. “Those who do not want to hear will have to feel,” says the N-VA minister.
