Unlikely: Horse runs wild with carriage but Wesley (29) gets everything under control

The coachman and two passengers may have been knocked overboard when the coach became uncontrollable. But a runaway horse is hard to stop. And Wesley Portugaels has also experienced that.

Wesley overtakes a draft horse and carriage by car, but the carriage is empty and the horse has run amok. His dashcam records everything. He drives past the horse and blocks a roundabout.

“Then I jumped on the horse out of reflex. The horse then started to gallop, because it probably faded because I jumped on it. I had no choice but to jump off again. But by jumping off while it was in movement, I still had enough speed. The carriage passed me and then I jumped on the carriage,” it sounds.

But there is only one rein on the right side and with that Wesley can bring the horse and carriage into scissor position. He realizes that he was also lucky.

“I was stiff with adrenaline. I was really shaking. I had sent my wife a message from you can call me, because I can’t type well anymore, that I could ventilate for a while and tell my story,” he says .

Perhaps due to a wrong maneuver one of the reins broke off and the horse and carriage were uncontrollable, says certified trainer Laurence of the Hippique Academy riding school in Oedelem, where the horse came from.

The coachman and two passengers, among them an 80-year-old man, jumped from the coach or catapulted away and ended up in a ditch, fortunately without much harm.
