Urs Fischer does not want to get involved in a discussion about a title chance for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Even after the league leaders’ 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund, the coach of the Irons is sticking to the season target of 40 points, which should also ensure that they remain in the league in the fourth year of the Bundesliga. Union has managed 23 points after ten games and is now sure of an unofficial record.

For the fifth time, the Köpenicker are at the top of the Bundesliga. Of all the former GDR top division teams, only FC Hansa Rostock managed to do that in the 1991/92 season. However, since Union has a four-point lead over FC Bayern, the Irons will lead the Bundesliga rankings for the sixth time next Sunday, regardless of the outcome of the game against bottom-placed VfL Bochum. In GDR times, Union was never the leader of the then Oberliga. RB Leipzig was only founded in 2009.

Fischer’s extremely cautious seasonal forecast is statistically unfounded. In this millennium, a team that was the leader on matchday ten could, at worst, slip to ninth place. That happened to VfL Wolfsburg in 2004/05. After first place, TSG Hoffenheim finished seventh in 2008/09. All other table leaders of the tenth game day played in the following season at least in the European Cup.
