Union Berlin: Details about Fischer’s exit leaked

Urs Fischer and Union Berlin are pulling the ripcord. The Swiss is no longer the coach of the troubled Köpenick team. Now new details about the 57-year-old’s departure from the Berliners have leaked.

Over and over: Urs Fischer’s time at Union Berlin is over. The coach had led the club from the 2nd Bundesliga into the Champions League and written a real football fairy tale. But this season there is a problem, Union is in last place in the Bundesliga table after a brutal negative series and has to worry about staying in the league. On Wednesday, Fischer and the Iron Men drew a line in the sand.

“Together we have now come to the conclusion that now is the time to take a different path,” said Union President Dirk Zingler about this decision. For him and the entire Union family, it was “a very sad moment,” said the club boss. “It hurts that we haven’t been able to break the negative trend of the last few weeks.”

Union Berlin: Urs Fischer will not play again

“Bild” reveals details about the separation. Accordingly, Zingler wanted Fischer to sit in the coaching bench for the upcoming Bundesliga game against FC Augsburg. But Fischer voluntarily renounced this game and immediately took his hat off – also with a view to the “six-point games” against Gladbach, Bochum and Cologne. Internationally, qualification for the knockout phase of the Europa League is still possible through third place in Union’s Champions League group.

According to the report, the coaching change was discussed and negotiated for a long time. Club officials met with Fischer on Monday after the 4-0 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. Afterwards, the end was almost certain. Fischer was no longer leading training on Tuesday, and the team was informed of his dismissal on Wednesday morning. Fischer will say goodbye to the team personally on Thursday.

The new trainer in Köpenick is U19 coach Marco Grote, and Marie-Louise Eta will sit next to him on the bench as assistant coach. Meanwhile, the search for a new head coach is in full swing.
