Wednesday night’s Champions League matches got off to a flying start.
In several matches, the opening goal was seen immediately in the opening meters and opening minutes of the match.
The biggest surprise was seen in Greece, where Olympiakos succeeded in the eighth minute against soccer giant Real Madrid.
The Spaniards collected themselves for a while, but soon recovered from the shock.
French superstar Kylian Mbappe freed the multiple champions from the preliminary torment.
Mbappe tied the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute. He struck again just two minutes later and Mbappe’s hat-trick saw off the Greek evening sun before the half-hour mark.
The strong start does not seem to carry the Greeks to a sensation, even though the Greeks came within a goal in the second half.
Mbappe’s fourth goal of the evening finally sealed the victory for Real Madrid.
Top match
Perhaps the most interesting match of the evening between Arsenal and Bayern Munich did not leave anyone cold when it came to the first half.
Dutch defender Jurrien Timber completed Arsenal’s 1–0 goal in the 22nd minute.
The goal caused a slight rustling of beards, as the Arsenal player made contact with the Bayern goalkeeper to Manuel Neurer moments before the finish line.
For a long time, Arsenal did not have time to grind in the lead position, because the 17-year-old Lennart Karl finished the game at 1-1 at the end of a handsome attack.
Bayern Munich were the stronger side in the first half, but everything changed in the second half.
Arsenal focused on one another more difficult crosses for the opponent, and only Neuer’s top shots kept the Germans in a tie.
Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli punished the visitors at the end of the second half and ensured that the best team of the early season continues with a clean game.
Arsenal seem unstoppable right now.
Crazy twist
Only one of the nine matches of the round did not see a goal in the first 45 minutes. This exceptional match was a clash between Frankfurt and Atalanta.
But this trend by no means continued into the second half.
The first round of fours was a steady race, where the Italians were a bit on top of their necks. In the second half, however, things exploded in the hands of the Germans.
Atalanta scored a whopping three goals in about five minutes, and the game was over.
A dramatic turn was also seen in the match between Atletico Madrid and Inter, where Atletico won in extra time.
The goal posts
Interesting results abounded on Wednesday.
PSG overthrew Tottenham 5-3, PSV claimed a 4-1 victory from Liverpool’s home corner, and Sport kept visitors Club Brügge at bay with a 3-0 victory.
FC Copenhagen–Kairat Almaty and Pafos–Monaco, which started at 7:45 p.m., also had plenty of goals. Copenhagen won the match 3–2, Pafos drew 2–2 against Monaco.
