U17 European Championship 2023: Germany shoots down Portugal at the start

The German U17 national team started the European Championship finals in Hungary with a clear victory. A BVB talent also met.

Coach Christian Wück’s team won 4-0 (2-0) against Portugal in Debrecen. Noah Darvich from SC Freiburg (32nd minute), Dortmund’s Almugera Kabar (39th) and Bayern’s Robert Ramsak (59th, 90th + 4) scored for the DFB juniors.

Other German opponents in Group C are defending champions France on Saturday and Scotland on Tuesday. The French team beat the Scots 3-1 on Wednesday. Wück sees every game in the “strong group” as a “final game”.

For the German U17s, it’s not just about a good place in the European Championship, but also about a ticket to the World Cup. The five World Cup spots go to the four semi-finalists and the winner of a playoff between the two quarter-finalists who played the best group stage.

The first and second place finishers in the four European Championship groups will qualify in Hungary for the quarter-finals on May 27th. The semi-finals will be played on May 30th and the final on June 2nd.
