Two women arrested for systematically mistreating horses during training

Two women, aged 36 and 25, from the municipality of Purmerend, were arrested this morning on suspicion of animal abuse. The women are said to have seriously mistreated several horses during so-called training sessions, the police said.

The police received several reports that the horses were being mistreated, and an investigation was launched.

A total of seven horses were seized and examined for injuries. A few other animals were also taken that needed care. The horses are now in a safe place where they get the care they need. For example, the help of horse behavior experts has been called in, according to the police.

Homes searched

In addition to the arrest of the women, two homes and a business were also searched. The Municipality of Purmerend is investigating whether there is any question of illegal occupation. In addition, the IJmond Environment Agency intends to impose a penalty payment due to a malfunctioning manure storage facility. The owner of the company has eight weeks to improve this.
