Two people die during a traditional sailing regatta in Australia. The sailors were on different ships.

There have been two deaths in the traditional Australian sailing regatta from Sydney to the Tasmanian island capital Hobart. A crew member of the yacht “Flying Fish Arctos” and one person on the “Bowline” died, the organizers said.

The crew members who died were each hit by the boom of their yacht. At the time of the accident, the “Flying Fish Arctos” was traveling 30 nautical miles east-southeast of Ulladulla, and the “Bowline” was 30 nautical miles east-northeast of Batemans Bay. Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful in both cases, it said.

The race is “an Australian tradition and it is heartbreaking that two people have lost their lives at a time that should be a joy,” wrote Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the X platform. “We send our messages to their families, friends and Our love and deepest condolences to the family.”

Because the incidents are being handled by the water police and not all family members have been contacted yet, no further details can be released, the organizers said. The regatta will be held for the 79th time this year.
