Incredible grief in winter sports: Within four days, two talented figure skaters died. A truck was involved both times.

The international figure skating scene is in shock. Two young athletes were killed within a few days – both were hit by a truck. The deaths of Julia Marie Gaiser and Matilda Ferrari triggered great sympathy.

Gaiser, 23 years old, died in Salzburg on September 11th. She was on the way home from training when she collided with a truck. The athlete from South Tyrol continued her career in the Austrian figure skating association. According to media reports, an alcohol test with the driver was negative.

The International Eislauf Union (ISU) recognized Gaiser in a public statement. The World Association said it was more than just a competitor. They will be remembered as a radiant personality who was known for their warmth and friendliness. Everyone who knew their laugh and commitment would have touched them. It also said that she left a gap that could not be filled – but her spirit and love of sport would remain unforgettable.

The next tragic accident occurred only four days later. Matilda Ferrari, 15 years old, also died after a collision with a truck. According to the Austrian “Kleine Zeitung”, she was traveling with two friends and wanted to cross a street when the pedestrian traffic lights were on red. Ferrari was on the way to school.

As a young athlete, she described the ISU with great passion for sport. She dreamed of starting at the Winter Olympics one day.
