TV lion Remy exchanges Hoenderdaell for Africa where he can be even more of a lion

Lion Remy moves from his shelter in Hoenderdaell Zoo to Africa. The crowd favorite was found in a small cage in a meadow near Tienhoven in 2018. The Lion Foundation took him in and NH followed the young lion in the series Remy and his friends. He is now a big guy who can soon be even more of a lion in South Africa.

“We are very happy that it is now happening,” says Robert Kruijff of the Lion Foundation in Anna Paulowna. “On March 17, he will move to The Lions Foundation in South Africa. The wait was actually mainly for his buddy Luna. They are going there together. We thought she had heart problems, but she is fine and can go too.”

Remy’s discovery in 2018 was all over the news. Soon afterwards it became clear through the AAP Foundation that Remy probably came from a traveling circus. He handed the animal over to a private individual in Belgium who had Remy in his cage. When the police discovered this, Remy was dumped in a meadow to avoid problems.

The Lions Foundation shelter where Remy and Luna are moving is 700 hectares in size and is located near Schrikkloof in the Limpopo province of South Africa.

The two lions have recently become so attached to each other in the shelter at Hoenderdaell Zoo that it was not possible to send them separately to the shelter in South Africa. “Remy could have gone earlier, but we didn’t want to send them separately. Now the time has finally come.”
