The World Handball Championships are hiking on private television: from 2027 the games no longer run at ARD and ZDF. All World Cup games are available exclusively at Dyn.
The transmission rights for the upcoming World Handball Championships have been re-awarded-and bring changes to TV viewers in Germany.
From 2027, the games of the German national teams and the final games of the World Championships 2027, 2029 and 2031 will run on free TV at ProSieben, Sat.1 and the streaming service Joyn. The public broadcasters ARD and ZDF go away empty-handed. Pay TV rights for all World Cup games worldwide have also been awarded: in the future they will be with the streaming provider Dyn. The majority of the platform belongs to Axel Springer SE.
The World Handball Championships are once again hiking on private television. Already in 2017 and 2019 the transfer rights were at ProSiebenSat.1. Most recently, the men’s World Cup games were seen again at ARD and ZDF from 2021. Dyn will be the only broadcaster to show all games of the World Championships live from 2027.
In addition to the World Championships, Dyn has also secured the transfer rights for further competitions. This includes the qualification tournaments of women and men for the 2028 Olympic Games as well as games of the German national national teams – from the female U18 to the male U21. Beach handball is also part of the rights package.
The decision is a great success for ProSiebenSat.1: At past tournaments, the German team’s games achieved five to eight million viewers. At the men’s home World Cup 2027, the 10 million mark could be cracked several times.
