Tuchel reprimands Tel – and asks for patience

Mathys Tel was well on his way to becoming a super joker. But he hasn’t scored a goal since the beginning of October. What’s wrong with the young Frenchman? “He was an extremely important factor,” said coach Thomas Tuchel before the Champions League game at Lazio Rome on Wednesday (9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online), “but he has lost a bit of his momentum and is no longer the same aggressive in the box when he comes in. He no longer has the absolute will and drive towards the goal.”

But why? “It has to do with self-confidence,” said Tuchel, “but maybe it’s also the case that after such a phase in which you score a lot of decisive goals, you’re asking too much of yourself.” Tuchel reported that things were “getting better again in training, he was scoring more again.” In general, it is “a completely normal process” for a guy “as young” as 18-year-old Tel to go through “a trough.”

His advice: “He must embrace every minute as if it were his first and last.” Tuchel promised: “We won’t stop trusting him. We need this carefree attitude and the desire to do something in ten minutes.”

“We didn’t digest it”: Neuer wants reparations

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer is still thinking about the loss of the top Bundesliga game in Leverkusen (0:3). “We couldn’t digest or cope with it if you went down there like that,” admitted the national goalkeeper on Tuesday evening in Rome. The 37-year-old is now expecting a reaction from his team in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday (9 p.m./DAZN) at the Stadio Olimpico against Lazio Rome.

“Everyone has the motivation and the hunger to perform better and show who we are. We have to play with a certain conviction at Bayern and be adults,” said Neuer. “We definitely want to move on to the next round. You have to keep getting up. That’s what distinguishes athletes.” This applies after defeats, after setbacks, after injuries.

What was also noticeable in Leverkusen was that it was not possible at all to put goal scorer Harry Kane in the spotlight offensively. “Harry also has to be fed by us. If he is brought into the danger zone, he is a phenomenon,” said Neuer. He himself continues to suffer from “a few problems” with his knee, but these did not prevent him from playing.

Good news for FC Bayern: Neuer is back

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer started training again before the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 at Lazio Rome on Wednesday (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). The 37-year-old completed the session in Munich on Tuesday morning as planned after missing on Monday for reasons of load control following knee problems the previous week. Noussair Mazraoui was also there again.

Coach Thomas Tuchel will have to do without the ailing Konrad Laimer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry in Rome. New signing Bryan Zaragoza is available again after his break due to a flu-like infection. Joshua Kimmich and Dayot Upamecano returned to the team after injuries in the 3-0 defeat in Leverkusen.

FC Bayern? “On the verge of the impossible”

Lazio Rome faces an almost impossible task in the Champions League duel with FC Bayern. “We are playing against a team at the absolute top level, one of the strongest in the world. It will be an extremely difficult game, bordering on the impossible,” said coach Maurizio Sarri at DAZN.
