I listened to it with an amazement rictus. The visitor of Africa talked about the agreements he hoped to sign in Washington and his host listened to it absorbed, but not for what he said but for how he said it. At the end of the meeting, before the cameras and microphones that had entered the Oval Office, Donald Trump congratulated the Liberian President for the perfect English who spoke and asked where he had learned it.
Joseph Boakai dodged elegantly. It is difficult to answer that question without highlighting the ignorance of who formulates it. It is obvious that, like all Liberians, that African president learned to speak English in his country, where it is the official language since its foundation because the history of Liberia is linked to the United States.
In the first decades of the 19th century, the American Colonization and Liberation Society of people of color, an organization linked to the government that showed some sensitivity to black slaves, colonized with release that territory flanked by Guinea, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. The flow of slaves released towards that African colony was growing and, in 1847, proclaimed its independence.
The origin of its population explains that the brand new African country would adopt as name Liberia and name Monrovia to its capital, in honor of President James Monroe, one of the promoters of the project. For that reason, Liberia was born, grew and came to the present speaking English. A president of the United States can ignore the history of many African countries, but ignoring Liberia implies ignoring the history of their own country. That explains that Trump’s question to Joseph Boakai has reproduced accompanied by the words “ignorance” and “ignorance” in most of the comments that appeared in US media.
Perhaps it also has to do with ignorance of its denial of climate change, which is not reversed even looking at catastrophes such as that caused by flooding in Texas. “I never saw anything the same,” said the American president against the devastation suffered by the Texans, but does not relate it to the phenomenon that has been denying for years. Although, correcting its decision to minimize the Catastrophic Supervision and Welfare Agency, to which it had already begun to cut budget.
Regarding the climate change that he always denied, it is probably a simulation of denialism, since he wants to appropriate the Canadian Arctic and Greenland because he knows that global warming is melting glaciers and leaving outdoor lands rich in minerals of all kinds. In appearances, Trump denies that there is climate change but, in fact, it moves geopolitical sheets because he knows that the ice is in recoil.
What should be recognized is that, in some cases, it corrects its errors caused by ignorance and negligence. What are the mistakes you correct? Those in which it is ridiculous for having announced facts that did not happen later. The last correction is being given with respect to Russia and Ukraine. The White House Chief is discovering only now that Vladimir Putin is a criminal and that the war began because he ordered invading the neighboring country.
Until Putin left him paying with the cessation of the fire he had announced with bombs and dishes, Trump had repeated the Kremlin version on the letter on the letter. He was convinced that Putin would return those favors helping him to appear as the “architect” of the end of the war. By the way, the end was going to favor Moscow because he was willing to make the occupied territories be in the hands of Russia. But, when the Russian leader facilitates the cessation of the fire that Trump was announcing, what he did was sabotage him with intense bombing to cities of Ukraine.
It happens that the military assistance cut reduced the Ukrainian Arsenales of interceptor missiles, which Putin took advantage of to hit kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Dnipro and other cities where Russian bombs demolished buildings and massacred civilians. Only then Trump discovered that he does not understand the Russian leader or the conflict that he wanted to turn into a stage where to star in the role of “great pacifier.” The outrage that caused him to feel betrayed by Putin and collide with the reality of that War Eslava put him back to NATO.
He had returned to the White House with the intention of withdrawing from the Atlantic Alliance to the power that created it. However, his clash with the reality imposed by Putin’s Russia put it re-calculated. And then, he restarted the sending of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. Perhaps he is aware that many civilians died and lost their homes because of the drones and Russian missiles that entered the cities devoid of interceptive projectiles. Or someone from their surroundings, if anyone understands these issues better than Trump and dares to point out errors.
The obsequence prevents the leader from “realizing.” They are probable that they have not told him, after receiving the president of Liberia, why his question about the reason for the perfect Englishman who speaks that African visitor speaks.
