According to a newspaper report, Donald Trump initially does not want to impose tariffs on trading partners such as China, Canada and Mexico immediately after being sworn in as US President.
He will instead instruct authorities to evaluate trade relations with China and neighbors on the North American continent, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a summary of a planned memorandum and Trump’s advisers. Future government representatives referred a reporter’s question about planned tariffs to the Wall Street Journal.
It could be a short reprieve. Shortly after winning the election in November, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. There are also fears in the EU that Trump could impose new tariffs.
Tariffs are a type of surcharge on imported goods. They are due at the border. The Republican had already relied on tariffs during his first term in office from 2017 to 2021. (dpa)
