Truck breaks in two after collision with train locomotive

“The accident happened in the port around 3.15 pm,” said Infrabel spokesman Tomas Baeken. A lorry with a trailer has been hit by a train set at a level crossing on the Marianne Van Outryveweg. That is near the A11 motorway.

Train driver & trucker unharmed

The collision broke the truck into two pieces. “The train locomotive has derailed, but the train driver and the trucker were unharmed,” said Infrabel’s spokesperson.

The accident happened in the port area on a transport line and therefore has no impact on passenger traffic. Goods traffic to the port does feel the effects, but this is limited because the line involved does not have the most activity.

“Quiet on Railway”

“The investigation shows that the truck with semi-trailer was partly stationary on the tracks when the train was approaching. The trucker may not have been able to continue smoothly due to the traffic in front of him,” Infrabel says. The rule is that you have to wait until you have free passage to completely cross the tracks.

Significant damage

The collision caused a lot of damage.

“The locomotive has been derailed, the rails have been bent and the road surface has been damaged. The signaling lights have also been torn off. The repair will probably not be ready until tomorrow,” Infrabel says.
