Funtil a few years ago the triple negative breast cancer it was considered among the most difficult forms to treat. Unlike other types of breast cancer, it does not have hormone receptors or HER2 to act on: this means that therapeutic targets are lacking and that, for a long time, the chemotherapy it remained the only possible option.

Triple negative breast cancer: the contribution of immunotherapy

In recent years the arrival ofimmunotherapy it has changed the history of the disease in many patients. When administered in early diagnosed forms, it can even lead to recovery. But not everyone can benefit from it: a portion of metastatic tumors, in fact, does not express the PD-L1 proteinnecessary for the immune system to be “reactivated”. In these cases the prognosis is often unfavorable.

Two studies that open up new possibilities

At the congress of European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) However, results have arrived that open up new possibilities. Two large international studios – ASCENT-03 And TROPION-Breast02 – they showed that the conjugated antibodiesdrugs capable of selectively recognize tumor cells and release a small amount of chemotherapy inside them, they can prolong survival and improve quality of life even in patients who cannot receive immunotherapy.

The results of the studies

In particular, the study ASCENT-03 demonstrated that treatment with sacituzumab govitecan delays disease progression and reduces the risk of worsening or death by 38%. The study TROPION-Breast02however, showed that datopotamab deruxtecan prolongs survival by approximately five months compared to standard chemotherapy.

A new chapter in care

Results which, as experts explain, they mark a new chapter in the treatment of triple negative: after years of little hope, women affected by this aggressive form of cancer can now count on more targeted and tolerable therapies.
