1. FC Union Berlin officially announced the transfer of Brenden Aaronson on Sunday. The 22-year-old, whose contract with Leeds United runs until 2027, joins the Köpenickers on a one-season loan deal.

The 29-time national player of the USA strengthens the offensive of the 2023/24 Bundesliga club, which is starting in the Champions League, and has thus become the most valuable player in the ranks of coach Urs Fischer’s team. Aaronson is already the fifth newcomer to the Alte Försterei.

Brenden Aaronson: Union Berlin’s path in the USA “didn’t go unnoticed”.

“Union’s path and the success of recent years have not gone unnoticed in the USA, Austria or England. A year ago I wouldn’t have believed that I’m here and can play in the Champions League with Union. I’m looking forward to the year ahead with joy and confidence and I want to help ensure that we have another successful season,” said the professional about his move.

Market values Union Berlin: All important changes at a glance

A year ago, Aaronson cost around 32.8 million euros, a record for RB Salzburg, from where he moved to Leeds at the time. For the Whites, the professional was seeded for long stretches of the season, playing in attacking midfield or on the right wing. In the final spurt of the fight against relegation, in which the traditional club only got two points from six games, he only came off the bench. In a total of 40 competitive games for the north of England, he scored one goal and three assists. For Salzburg it was 13 goals and 15 assists in 66 games.

“We were very happy about Brenden’s commitment, he’s a type of player that we don’t have and that will do our offensive game good. Despite his young age, he already has a lot of international experience and will complement our squad at a high level,” commented Oliver Ruhnert, Union’s managing director for professional football, on the loan deal.

Brenden Aaronson: At Union Berlin one for the squad width or top?

Manuel Veth, Area Manager US & North America at Transfermarkt, assesses the transfer as follows: “In view of the conditions, Aaronson’s commitment fits in very well with Union’s previous transfer philosophy of bargain hunting. The attacking midfielder will bring a new element to Berlin’s midfield, which currently lacks a creative player like Aaronson. Aaronson, nicknamed ‘Medford Messi’, is a gifted player whose energetic and unyielding style of play suits both Union’s fighting spirit and teamwork well, as well as a new creative element in a midfield that is particularly important against those below opponent has been missing so far. However, the move will only work if Aaronson manages to repeat his productive numbers from MLS and Salzburg.”
