Lazio Rome introduced an old acquaintance as a new trainer. Maurizio Sarri takes over for the second time after his almost 1,000 days between 2021 to 2024. The 66-year-old Neapolitan succeeds Marco Baroni, who has been on the sidelines in the past two seasons.

“Maurizio Sarri has returned home. His return is a decision of the heart, conviction and the vision. With it we want to resume a way that is interrupted too early, in the awareness that we can bring enthusiasm, identity and ambition together again. Welcome back to your home, Comandante,” said Lazio President Claudio Lotito.

In March 2024, Sarri had resigned from his post – after that he did not take over any further club. Sarri, whose working paper would have existed until 2025, left the Serie-A-Club after 137 games with a point cut of 1.67 points. The veteran had previously shown himself to be satisfied with the width and depth of his squad and was publicly criticized. The team is by no means sufficiently occupied to play in four competitions, Sarri knew. In 2022/23 the club celebrated the vice championship.

Lazio had spent significantly less money on transfers in the first term of the former Chelsea and Juventus trainers than in the years before (for statistics). Sarri showed through that this was not always in his sense – especially since he did not feel sufficiently heard in his wishes of the club tour. Now both sides want to try it together a second time. The 2024/25 season finished 7th in Lazio.
