FC Bayern will no longer award the shirt number 5 in honor of Franz Beckenbauer. The German record champions are also planning a tournament to honor the “Emperor”.
Franz Beckenbauer died at the beginning of this year at the age of 78. At the beginning of next year, FC Bayern wants to honor the football icon once again in a special way. On the occasion of the club’s 125th anniversary, a unique tournament will take place in Munich’s SAP Garden on March 17th: the Beckenbauer Cup.
As the club announced, the proceeds from the small-field indoor tournament will benefit the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. The tournament brings together legendary teams from top international clubs. In addition to FC Bayern, Real Madrid, AC Milan Glorie, Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart and another top team not yet named will be competing. Especially: The Beckenbauer Cup is world champion and former captain Philipp Lahm’s first appearance as coach of the Bayern legends.
Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern, explained: “It was particularly important to us to support the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation with this tournament. Franz always had an open ear for everyone and was always ready to give a lot of himself We want to continue to live this legacy.”
Lahm, who most recently worked as tournament director for the European Championships, recalled Beckenbauer’s importance: “We will never forget him. Especially for someone who was born in Munich, he was always a personality that inspired me in a special way.”
The Franz Beckenbauer Foundation is dedicated to supporting people with disabilities and people who are in need through illness or through no fault of their own. In addition to the tournament, FC Bayern is planning further recognition: Beckenbauer’s shirt number 5 will no longer be given out at the club, and the German Football League has decided to name the Supercup after him.
