The Dane Jonas Vingegaard wins the second stage of the 2026 Tour of Catalonia

As of: March 28, 2026 • 5:48 p.m

Jonas Vingegaard was once again faster than everyone else at the Tour of Catalonia. Remco Evenpoel drove on the mountain for his colleague Florian Lipowitz, who can now achieve something historic.

Cycling ace Florian Lipowitz captured a podium place at the Tour of Catalonia with another very strong performance. On the difficult penultimate 6th stage with the short mountain finish in Queralt, the Tour third from the Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe team only had to admit defeat to the confident overall leader Jonas Vingegaard and the Frenchman Lenny Martinez and goes into the final stage in third place.

Never a German in the top three

The two-time Danish Tour winner Vingegaard took his second stage win in a row after 158.2 km, ten seconds ahead of Martinez, who was ahead of Lipowitz in the sprint for second place. In the overall standings, Jumbo Visma captain Vingegaard now leads by 1:22 minutes ahead of Martinez (Bahrain Victorious).

Lipowitz is another eight seconds behind. The Ulm native’s lead over fourth-placed Frenchman Valentin Paret-Peintre is 13 seconds. In the long history of the Volta a Catalunya, no German has ever made it into the top three.

Evenepoel drives for Lipowitz

RB star signing Remco Evenepoel put himself at the service of his teammate on Saturday and set the pace for Lipowitz on the way to the final climb. The group of favorites overtook the Austrian Felix Gall, who had previously been second in the overall standings. Only 2.5 km from the finish Evenepoel let himself fall back.

The 105th edition of the Tour of Catalonia, which was first held in 1911, ends on Sunday with a stage in Barcelona. It goes over Montjuic seven times, which is also on the program for the Tour de France in July.

Pidcock with bone and Ligament injuries

Tom Pidcock was no longer there on Saturday. The British mountain bike Olympic champion, who came second at Milan-Sanremo a week earlier, suffered bone and ligament injuries in a serious fall on Friday, which will be diagnosed in more detail in the coming days. Pidcock had left the road due to inattention on a descent and fallen into a precipice.
