The German road cyclist Georg Zimmermann got out of the race after his violent fall on the ninth stage of the 112nd Tour de France. The 27-year-old from the team Intermarché-Wanty developed symptoms of a concussion on Monday night and no longer competed in the central massif for the tenth stage to Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy.
First German failure
Zimmermann is the first German failure at this year’s tour of France. The Augsburger came down on Sunday on the way to Châteauroux away from the cameras and, among other things, suffered a large wound on the left thigh and an injury to the left elbow. He then fought his way to the finish of 117 km.
Zimmermann originally hoped for a continuation of the tour. “It is incredible luck that I have not suffered any breaks. The elbow is a big problem. The team doctor sewed two wounds. The holding on to the handlebars is very worried, but I am determined to continue the tour,” said Zimmermann on Sunday.
The accident had happened without warning: “Everything went so quickly. My teammates then told me that I fell over a bottle on the ground.”
