Debut against United already?
For Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou, Timo Werner’s first and less successful trip to the Premier League is of little importance. The attacker, whom the “Spurs” have loaned from RB Leipzig for the rest of the season with an option to buy, is now “a different player,” he daresay, explained Postecoglou on Friday.
Werner moved from RB to Chelsea in the summer of 2020 for 53 million euros. Of all German professionals in football history, only Kai Havertz moved larger sums in a single transfer when he moved to the Blues and last summer (to statistics). Werner was unable to convince the former Champions League winner and city rivals “Spurs”, especially in his second year. Overall, he has 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 games for Chelsea. The now 27-year-old center forward then returned to Leipzig for 20 million euros.
What happened in the past is not relevant, Postecoglou emphasized at a press conference: “I’m looking at what he can give us now, not at what happened three or four years ago.” Werner is certainly a different person now . “We are all developing,” emphasized the 58-year-old Australian of Greek origin. He assumes that the German international, who is also fighting for a place in the European Championship squad, will fit well into the “Spurs” style of play. “He brings what we were looking for,” said Postecoglou. He may be able to show and prove it this Sunday when Tottenham take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.
