A special and rare image along the N366 between Emmer-Compascuum and Ter Apel. A tornado was recorded last night during a fierce thunderstorm.
Tornados is rare our country. “I am quite surprised by it, you don’t see this often,” says RTV Drenthe-Weerman Hans Nienhuis. “The data showed in advance that tough weather was coming, but I did not expect it to turn out this way. I would have liked to have seen it in real life, a missed opportunity.”
Nienhuis has just returned from the United States, where he went ‘storm chasen’. His goal is to see and experience hurricanes and tornadoes up close. “I just got out of the midwest two days back and then I almost get a tornado on my sidewalk at home. It was only ten kilometers away.”
Fortunately we still have the photos and Nienhuis has studied it diligently. “That rotating movement, it is unmistakably a tornado. It just doesn’t have as long trunk as the tornadoes in the United States. And luckily the damage seems to be not too bad.”
The Tornado was mainly above lands and did not hit any buildings. The damage was therefore limited to some fallen branches.
