Toppmöller believes Bayer Leverkusen can win titles

Before the top game of the Bundesliga between league leaders Bayer Leverkusen and pursuers FC Bayern Munich on Saturday (6:30 p.m./Sky), former coach Klaus Toppmöller sees his former club on course for the title.

“I absolutely believe Leverkusen will win the championship if they continue to play like this and the key players stay healthy,” wrote the 72-year-old in a “Kicker” column: “It’s a huge opportunity for my former club to use the name ‘Vizekusen’ to leave behind.”

Under Toppmöller, Bayer was runner-up in 2002 and lost the finals in the DFB Cup and the Champions League.

Looking at the current squad, midfield strategist Granit Xhaka (“The smartest purchase in recent years”) and offensive star Florian Wirtz (“It’s a pleasure to watch him”) stand out for Toppmöller.
