The WTA tournament in Miami overshadows an inglorious incident. Top star Iga świątek was apparently threatened during training. The organizers reacted.
Unrest away from the court: During the WTA tournament in Miami, Iga świątek was threatened by a man during training, according to the BBC. The incident is said to have occurred last Saturday, as the British broadcaster reports, citing the management of the Polish.
The man had previously become conspicuous through social media and sent świątek insulting messages. Now he had behaved aggressively and tuned in training the star player. “The incident in Miami seems to be a direct transition from verbal online aggression to a threat in the real world,” said the BBC according to management information.
The tournament organizers and the WTA are said to have reacted quickly to the incident and have taken additional security measures around świątek. The organizers emphasized to the BBC that the security of all tournament participants was taken “extremely seriously”. The WTA announced that there are extensive security protocols in order to be able to react quickly and effectively to incidents of this kind.
Only a few hours after the report became public, świątek surprisingly lost to the Filipino Alexandra Eala in the quarterfinals with 2: 6, 5: 7. Eala had previously conquered Australian Open winner Madison Keys.
The 23-year-old world ranking second świątek is not only because of her sporting appearance, but also because of her doping lock. In August she was tested positively for the forbidden heart remedy trimetacid. Świątek said it was a contaminated medication and shortly afterwards served a lock of one month. The world-anti-doping agency considered the information plausible and referred to an objection.
