“Top Gun 3”: Sequel to the blockbuster is in the works

Third outing for Tom Cruise as pilot Maverick.

The sequel to one of the biggest box office hits of 2022, “Top Gun 2: Maverick”, is in the starting blocks: The development phase of “Top Gun 3” has started at Paramount. The announcement follows the signing of a deal between Tom Cruise and Warner Bros.

What we know about the “Top Gun” sequel

“The Hollywood Reporter” reported on the beginnings of the making of the third Maverick film. Some details about the second sequel to the Ace Pilot film have already become known. Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger will pen the script for the new installment. Joseph Kosinski, director of “Maverick,” is set to return to the director’s chair. In addition to Tom Cruise, colleagues Miles Teller and Glen Powell will also be brought in front of the camera again.

The news comes shortly after Cruise’s deal with Warner Bros was announced. It ties him to the studio as both a lead actor and producer on future films, although not exclusively.

The box office hit “Maverick”

“Top Gun: Maverick” grossed a whopping $1.5 billion in 2022 – the first mega-cinema hit since the end of the lockdown. Steven Spielberg even credited Cruise with saving the cinema business, which was hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The sequel, released decades after the 1986 original, cemented the then 60-year-old Cruise’s status as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

However, production on “Top Gun 3” isn’t exactly expected any time soon. Cruise is currently busy working on an eighth Mission: Impossible film, which is expected to be released in May 2025.
