Top candidate Kai Wegner (50) relies on turquoise

From Hildburg Bruns

The color of hope for the Berlin CDU is turquoise. On the posters, the give-away pens, the polyester scarves of their campaigners.

Top man Kai Wegner (50) was sent into the three-way battle between the CDU, Greens and SPD for the Red Town Hall with a lot of tailwind from the 284 delegates (one abstention). 77 days until the decision – surveys show: It will be a neck-and-neck race.

While the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (44) declared building, building, building to be a top priority a year ago, the CDU politician is counting on administrative reform and digitization: “We are the official ping-pong, tired of all the double responsibilities. We will make sure that Berlin works again.”

Wegner Messages:

► Traffic: “We won’t let the car be banned in Berlin either.” The A 100 will be completely expanded with the CDU.

► Education: “Many children are not physically able to sit still for 45 minutes. We will reintroduce the pre-schools.” (Abolished in 2006) The CDU wants to occupy the department in the new Senate.

► Internal security: “Unlike red-green-red, we trust the police, equip them with bodycams and tasers.”

There was a little praise for the Greens for apologizing for the election chaos and approaches to administrative reform. For the SPD, on the other hand, broad rejection. Wegner: “The comrades think they own the city. That must and will change.”

Next test of possible similarities: Thursday, the CDU wants to extend the preventive detention for climate glue from 48 hours to four days in parliament. SPD Interior Senator Iris Spranger (61) is in favor of the Greens and Leftists.
