During the recent reunion of Black Sabbath in Villa Park in Birmingham, a well -known sight ensured cheerfulness. At least for long -term fans. Drummer Bill Ward let the shirt fall again at the last performance of his band. What guitarist Tony Iommi praised with a winking comment afterwards.

“You look like Gollum”: a loving tissue among old friends

During an interview with the US radio presenter Eddie Trunk, which was led after the performance, Iommi commented on the scene with typical British humor. “Oh my god. A funny story: During a rehearsal break we sat in the studio while eating, Bill was back without – as always. Geezer [Butler] Just wanted to bite his sandwich and just called: ‘Bill, put on your shirt. You spoil my appetite! ‘”Iommi laughed heartily at the memory.

The 77-year-old Iommi took the moment as an opportunity for another swipe: “I said to him: ‘Bill, you look like Gollum.’ I don’t think he knew who Gollum was. ” The reference naturally referred to the famous figure from JRR Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”. But instead of being insulted, he remained completely. “Bill has always been like that. He just does what he wants. And that’s great,” continued Iommi.

The chemistry between the band members was immediately noticeable, reports Iommi. “As soon as we were together, the old jokes flew back and forth. It was really funny.”

Four songs instead of seven: What was behind the shortened setlist

It was originally planned to play six to seven songs, the guitarist revealed. However, due to time restrictions in Villa Park and the fact that front man Ozzy Osbourne had previously completed his own soloset, Black Sabbath had to reduce the number of songs to four.

Among the pieces that were painted included “Fairies Wear Boots” and the iconic track “Black Sabbath”. The band alluded briefly before moving into “War Pigs”. The performance was not only a musical highlight, but also a nostalgic reunion full of typical Sabbath dynamics-including upper body-free Bill Ward.
