Talk show Today Inside (SBS6) won the Golden Televizier Ring for the second time on Thursday. That is exceptional: normally previous winners are not eligible again for the award for best television program of the year. Because it was the sixtieth anniversary edition of the prize, the organization made an exception this time. Other nominees were Hunting Season: Most Wanted (Videoland) and the drama series Wild Ground (AVROTROS). Today Inside received 74 percent of the votes.
The award was made in the studio of Today Inside received by presenters Johan Derksen, René van der Gijp and Wilfred Genee. The trio was not present at the gala in Carré, but made an extra-long broadcast. Presenter Wilfred Genee emphasized the uniqueness of the program in his acceptance speech.
Important for politicians
The program has attracted a large and loyal viewership for years, which is well mobilized to vote for ‘VI’ for the Ring.
Young viewers also continue to enjoy the program. They know this in politics: last week Frans Timmermans called the program ‘too important’ not to sit there. Geert Wilders will resume his campaign there on Friday.
Chantal Janzen, together with Jan Smit responsible for the presentation of the gala evening in Carré, subtly lashed out in a song Today Inside. “We have to respect women more […] no more candles in holes,” Janzen sang, referring to a controversial statement by Johan Derksen in the 2022 program.
‘Golden edge’
Martijn Krabbé won the Ring for best presenter on Thursday. Krabbé is terminally ill but was able to attend the gala. Earlier in the evening, before an award had been presented, he received a long round of applause for his presence. “My farewell to television has a golden edge,” said Krabbé in his acceptance speech.
The Ring for best actor went to Wesley van Klink for his leading role in the series Bennie about an 18-year-old boy with Down syndrome. The idea for the series came from actor Barry Atsma, whose late brother had Down syndrome.
The ‘impact’ Ring went to Eva Jinek and Emma Heesters for an interview about singer Heesters’ cervical cancer diagnosis. She dedicated the prize to her “fellow sufferers” and ended with an appeal: “Ladies, have that smear test done, because it can save your life.” Heesters has now recovered.
Won in the ‘youth’ category Summer Breaka series about teenagers working at a Turkish holiday resort. Kim-Lian van der Meij, who plays a role in the series, expressed her hope for a safe future for children worldwide in her acceptance speech. The ‘talent’ Ring went to presenter and political reporter Thomas van Groningen, in the ‘online video series’ category the prize went to Gerard Joling for his vlog series.
