Today 200 asylum seekers on cruise ship Velsen-Noord, about 100 more every day

According to some rumors, the reception ship in Velsen-Noord would already be overflowing with asylum seekers, but in reality, according to the COA, the counter today stands at about two hundred of the maximum twelve hundred temporary residents.

Yesterday the first hundred people came at the end of the afternoon with a bus in Velsen-North.

On social media, the trend regarding childcare is rather negative. The administrators of the Facebook group ‘Je bent Velsen-Noorder als…’ meanwhile say they will delete every message about the reception cruise ship.

In the coming days, ‘for logistical reasons among other things’, more and more asylum seekers will arrive step by step. “In the coming days, about a hundred people will come to Velsen-Noord every day, until there are 1,000, or incidentally 1,200 people,” reports a spokesperson for the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). This body must ensure that every refugee in the Netherlands has a roof over their head.

Cross-section of the group of asylum seekers in the Netherlands

Yesterday Mayor Frank Dales reported that the first group of about a hundred temporary residents comes from Syria and Yemen. “They stayed in tents in Budel and Ter Apel.” COA normally receives asylum seekers in those places. But for months now do people regularly sleep outside.

The COA spokesperson can say about the second group that it is ‘a cross-section of the group of asylum seekers in the Netherlands’. They are men, women and children. There are no so-called ‘safelanders’ among them, he confirms. That was also the agreement of the municipality of Velsen with the COA.

For the time being, every emergency shelter in the Netherlands is more than necessary, reports the COA spokesman. “It is still very much a puzzle with places. In Velsen-Noord there is now a location, but in other places shelters are also closing again. Ter Apel has not yet been relieved. We are not there yet with the extra boats in Velsen and Amsterdam.”
