– We follow the principle of flexible choice. In collaboration with the sports federations, we have wanted to support our top athletes’ preparation for the Games and give them peace towards the Olympics, the top athletic director Janne Hänninen said in a news release from the Finnish Olympic Committee.
– The criterion for choosing these athletes has been the potential of last season to be involved in a medal battle among the world’s top. At this point, the qualifying situation of the athletes selected is already so clear that we were able to name them on the race team.
Hänninen estimates that the size of the Finnish team will be about 100 athletes. Men’s and women’s hockey teams have a total of 48 athletes.
The last choices will be made on January 23.
