What a surprise in the opening time trial of the 59th Tirreno-Adriatico, organized by RCS Sport. The Spaniard Juan Ayuso, 21 years old, a talent from Pogacar’s UAE Emirates, beats Pippo Ganna by 1″ at an average speed of 52.554 km/h. At the first intermediate in Viareggio, after 5 km, the Italian time trial champion was two seconds behind Ayuso’s best time (5’53”): in the return stretch he only gained one. Compared to Ganna, Ayuso set off two hours before the Olympian to take advantage of the better weather conditions.

PREDESTINED

Winner of the Giro d’Italia Under 23 in 2021, third in the 2022 Vuelta and fourth in 2023, Ayuso is the best Spanish talent of this generation: he grew up in Italy in the Colpack team, the very same team where Ganna raced. Third is the British Vernon at 12″, fourth Milan at 12″, fifth Cerny at 14″; seventh Tiberi at 17″ and ninth Vingegaard at 22″, who was among the very first to start. On Tuesday the second stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico, Camaiore-Follonica, 199 km, sprinted with Cavendish, Philipsen, Merlier, Ewan and Milan. The race will end on Sunday in San Benedetto del Tronto.
