Timo Werner is moving to England

National striker Timo Werner is leaving the DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig and wants to increase his chances of winning the home European Championship at Tottenham Hotspur. The top English club announced on Tuesday evening that the 27-year-old would initially be loaned out until the end of the season. According to Spurs, the London club has a purchase option, but RB did not confirm this in its statement.

“Timo and we would like him to gain as much match practice as possible with a view to the European Championship in Germany next summer,” said Leipzig sports director Rouven Schröder: “He was shown the opportunity to do this at Tottenham Hotspur, so a loan makes sense for all parties . We are firmly convinced that Timo will find his old strength again in the Premier League. His qualities are completely beyond question with 113 goals for RB Leipzig.”

Werner’s contract with RB runs until 2026. The striker wants to recommend himself to Spurs for a place in the German squad for the home European Championship.

In Leipzig he was no longer part of the regular lineup, only started twice in the Bundesliga and not once in the Champions League. He only scored two goals in 14 competitive games.

Werner had already played in the Premier League from 2020 to 2022, when he moved from Leipzig to Chelsea for a fee of 53 million euros. In the summer of 2022, RB brought him back for 20 million euros.
