Since July, Tilburg has issued 3,638 fines to drivers who did not comply with the Zero Emission Zone (ZE zone) in the city. That earned the city at least 400,000 euros. These fines are the result of the new rules that came into effect this year.
Since January 1, 2025, Tilburg has had a zero-emission zone within the ring roads. Only trucks built in 2017 or younger and vans of at least emission class 5 are allowed to drive in this zone.
The city hopes to improve the quality of life and air quality in the center. However, there is a transition period until 2030 during which certain cleaner vehicles will still have access.
Warning period
Tilburg used the first half of the year as a warning period. During these six months, offenders did not receive a fine, but a warning on their doorstep.
They were informed about the new rules and warned that if they entered the zone after June 30, they would risk a fine. A total of 4,424 warnings were issued.
Forewarned counts for two
The city started issuing fines on July 1. However, there is a maximum of one fine per fourteen days per offending vehicle.
Tilburg is therefore a lot more accommodating than other cities in the country. In Rotterdam, offenders can receive a new fine for the same violation within two days.
National top 3
It is not surprising that Rotterdam is the leader with a total of 14,021 fines issued. The Hague is in second place with 4,646 fines, where fines have been issued every day since October 1.
This is followed by Tilburg, which, as the smallest city of the three, was still able to set the cash register ringing.
What do you have to pay in case of a violation?
For an offense with a van you have to pay 120 euros and for a truck you have to pay 310 euros per offense.
