It was the last week for the motorist who had to cross the Afsluitdijk. Last Tuesday there was a problem at the lock complex for the first time this week. The road was closed in both directions in the morning for traffic and that led to a traffic jam.
According to Johan de Boer, spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat, was caused by the heat. “That also played at Bruggen in the rest of the Netherlands,” he says. “Because of the heat, the steel bridges turn off and then you can no longer turn them, or they get stuck.”
To overcome that, water is sprayed on it. But it was so hot Tuesday that a little water helped, says De Boer.
Two malfunctions yesterday
The second malfunction, which from yesterday morning, was caused by the breaking of a sensor that detects whether the bridge is safe in its final score. “Then the service gets a signal that the traffic can over it again. But it no longer worked.”
The sensor was repaired yesterday. To test whether everything worked well again, traffic was led across the Zuidbrug.
