Three more minutes of football: stopped game Jong Volendam – IJsselmeervogels must be played

With only three minutes left on the clock, the referee ended the match between Jong FC Volendam and IJsselmeervogels prematurely on Saturday. At a 3-3 score, a plastic cup of beer was thrown on the field for the second time, stopping the game. At the same time, supporters clashed with each other. The KNVB has determined that the match must still be played.

It is not clear who threw the cup in question. It is the first time in amateur football that a match has been permanently stopped for this reason. FC Volendam regrets the course of events and looks at all available camera images. There are also discussions with those directly involved.

Images, which have been distributed via Twitter, show that supporters of both clubs are fighting each other at the end of the match. There is a lot of pushing and pulling back and forth and a few blows are dealt. A steward also hits one of the supporters.

At home matches of Jong FC Volendam, all spectators sit in the same stand and there are no special safety measures. Due to the importance of the game, IJsselmeervogels was supported by about 500 fans who traveled along.

Relegation battle

The final score of the match is important in the fight against relegation from the second division. Jong Volendam is officially relegated with a draw, but still has a straw to maintain itself with a win. IJsselmeervogels also desperately needs the points to avoid a possible play-off competition.

A date on which the last three minutes of football must be played has not yet been announced. IJsselmeervogels plays the remainder with one man less, because Wessel Boer was sent off with two yellow cards.
