More than twenty sports spread over twelve Drenthe municipalities. The Special Olympics, a sports tournament for G-athletes, will take place in Drenthe in 2028. G-athletes are athletes with an intellectual disability.
From football to flair rugby and from open water swimming to padel. In two years’ time, Drenthe will be the setting for many sports for an entire weekend.
For example, hockey, football and handball are played in the host municipality of Hoogeveen. However, the football and hockey finals are not held in the municipality of Hoogeveen. The football final day is in the municipality of Emmen.
In addition to football, the municipality of Emmen hosts bowling, swimming and triathletes. The hockey final is played in the municipality of Tynaarlo. Zuidlaren is the setting for the hockey final day. Sailing is on the Paterswoldsemeer and judo is in Eelde.
The Special Olympics is a national sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities. The games are held every two years, each time in a different place in the Netherlands.
The Province of Drenthe announces that thorough cooperation preceded the distribution. “In consultation with the policy officials of municipalities and representatives within the Adapted Sports platform, the available accommodations and the associated options were carefully examined.”
“We jointly investigated which sports clubs could best connect, so that a strong and well-organized structure can be established for each sport.” On the map below you can see at a glance which sports are where during the Special Olympics in Drenthe.
