The Telekom Baskets Bonn fell behind against Alba Berlin early on and suffered their third defeat of the season.

The Bonn team lost 70:84 (32:35) in the game on matchday 6 on Sunday and thus slipped to eleventh place in the table. The three defeats are offset by three wins. Alba, on the other hand, celebrated its third win in the fifth game and improved to seventh place.

The best thrower for Bonn was Alijah Comithier, who showed his best performance to date in the Bonn uniform with 27 points. Otherwise, no Bonn player scored in double figures. It was different for the Berliners: Ex-Bonner Sam Grisel led the scoring with 14 points, followed by Malte Delow (13 points), Norris Agbakoko (eleven) and J’wan Roberts (ten). The crux of the Bonn game was the total of 17 turnovers, especially in the first quarter.

Bonn lost the ball ten times in the first quarter

Because the Baskets got off to a catastrophic start to the game. In the first few minutes nothing came together for the Bonn team. Instead, ball loss followed ball loss. After more than four minutes, Alba led 9-0 before Jeffery Garrett ended Bonn’s lull with a three-pointer. But it didn’t really get any better. In the first quarter alone, the home team committed ten turnovers and went into the first quarter break with a 9:25 deficit.

In the second half of the game, however, the roles reversed. Suddenly nothing was going well for the Berliners. Instead, Bonn finally found its rhythm and, led by Comithier, went on an 8-0 run.

Alba coach Pedro Calles took the time out. In fact, it was now easier for the Berliners to score points, but the momentum was still clearly on Bonn’s side. The Baskets were defensively attentive and significantly more focused than in the first quarter. In addition, Bonn secured seven offensive rebounds in the second quarter alone and got within 32:35 by the halftime siren.

Baskets come close, but not to equalize

After the break, the game was largely even. After three minutes, Grayson Murphy reduced the deficit to two points for the Baskets (38:40), but the Bonn team couldn’t get any closer because the Berliners were attentive defensively. Jack Kayil blocked Zachery Cooks’ lay-up, while on the other side Malte Delow increased the score to 44:38 from Alba’s perspective.

What Berlin can do, Bonn can also do. Kur Jongkuch cleared Justin Bean. On the other side, Comithier converted two free throws and reduced the deficit to just one point (45:46). But the equalizer didn’t want to fall any further.

Instead, Alba made another small run in the final phase of the third quarter. Because Bonn missed twice from the three-point line, Alba moved back to seven points (49:56). Grayson Murphy once again provided a highlight by reducing the score to 53:58 from Bonn’s perspective with the final siren from the halfway line.

Berlin’s 7-0 run in the final quarter

However, the action did not create any new momentum, as Alba came into the final quarter better. Moses Wood completed Berlin’s 7-0 run with a layup and gave them a double-digit lead again (55:65) seven minutes before the end.

In the middle of the quarter, both teams struggled with their shooting percentages. On the Bonn side, only Comithier was accurate from outside. However, Alba always had the right answer ready. First it was former Bonn player Sam Griesel from the three-point line, then a three-point game from Moses Wood. Berlin’s lead remained constant at ten points.

Baskets host Ulm on Saturday

The Baskets continue next Saturday with a home game against Ratiopharm Ulm (8 p.m.). The Berliners receive the MBC at the same time.
