Thiago Silva: “Doors always open for Seleção” – Most valuable 39-year-old

Last appearance at the 2022 World Cup

Thiago Silva can well imagine a return to the Brazilian national team. The 39-year-old central defender from Chelsea FC, who last played for the “Seleção” in the quarter-final defeat against Croatia (3:5 nE) at the 2022 World Cup, declared after the tournament in Qatar that it was his last World Cup. However, it wasn’t a resignation, he emphasized in an interview with “Guardian“.

“I won’t say that I will never play for the Seleção again. If you would like to call me for the Copa América or World Cup qualifiers to help in any way, I will be happy to assist you. If they want me for what I show for Chelsea, I’m here. I will always keep my doors open for the Seleção,” said Silva. The veteran is still with the “Blues” and had his contract extended until 2024 in February. At 39, he is the oldest player in the Premier League this season and, with a market value of €2 million, the most valuable player in his age group.

Brazil’s national team, for which Silva played 113 games and is fifth among the record players, has not been at its best recently. Of the seven games in 2023, only three were won; in the World Cup qualification there was a 1-1 draw against Venezuela in the last international break and a 2-0 defeat in Uruguay.

Experienced players in particular are in short supply for the five-time world champions; the oldest professional in the squad is 32-year-old Danilo. Silva therefore believes that he can still have a positive influence: “I can’t say that I don’t want to be nominated anymore. If I have the opportunity to help this young team, I will be available. I think you can never refuse the Seleção when they call.”
