From the cup winner to professional: Werder Bremen brings six U19 heroes to the Bundesliga squad. The talents have now also been honored in the town hall.

Just a few months after the DFB Cup triumph of the U19 team in May, more and more players of the successful year are moving up to Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga squad.

As the latest newcomer, central defender Karim Coulibaly (18) signed a professional contract. He is already the third player from the cup winner team who made the jump-after Patrice Covic (18) and Salim Musah (19).

Another three talents from the victorious U19 team are already in the Bundesliga squad: goalkeeper Stefan Smarkalev (18), defender Mick Schmetgens (17) and midfielder Wesley Adeh (18). The success story of the young kickers was also officially recognized on Wednesday: Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) welcomed players and coaches in the Bremen town hall to honor the DFB Cup win.

“Those responsible showed me a clear path right from the start. I am happy and I am really proud that I can continue here at Werder,” said Coulibaly according to his contract signature.
