These men hang up the lanterns in the Dorpsstraat: ‘People are glad we’re back’

The Dorpsstraat is once again decorated in summer with hundreds of lanterns. The Lampion-Lampionnen.nl team spends a day providing the entire street with the brightly colored lamp shades.

Director Jeroen Oostlander from Breda got up early to travel to Zoetermeerse Dorpsstraat with his team. On the corner with the Leidsewallen we find the men with boxes of colored lanterns. A colorful scene!

For the second year in a row, the historic shopping street will be given a summery metamorphosis. “People are happy with lanterns, because they give a summer feeling,” says Jeroen. “We hang them up for weddings, birthdays and garden parties. But we also visit shopping centers such as Woerden, Rotterdam and therefore here in Zoetermeer.”

The team spends about a day hanging the cables with a total of 500 lanterns throughout the entire shopping street. With an aerial platform, the garlands with spheres are hung one by one. “We started at the Leidsewallen and then enter the Dorpsstraat from the Oude Kerk.” Last year a few died after a few weeks. “The nylon lanterns are weatherproof,” says Jeroen. “But a major storm can cause damage. This happened in a few places last year, unfortunately we cannot prevent it.”

During the summer months the lanterns remain hanging. “Passers-by are often disappointed when we remove them again. But it is really meant for the summer. We will continue soon otherwise we will not make it today.”
