These are the streets and squares of Barcelona that will have a woman’s name

Barcelona give to female namebefore the end of this month of March, to 16 streets and squares of the city, where only the 8.3% of public roads have a feminine identity.

He Barcelona’s town hall reported this Saturday that the Nomenclator Commission of the city has already agreed on the name change of these 16 spaces, which will take place during the month of March, in the days before and after the celebration on the 8th of International Women’s Day.

By the end of 2022, of the 4,704 roads registered in Barcelona, 392 streets, squares and public gardens were named after women (8.3%) compared to 1,666 with masculine names (35.4%).

The percentage of streets dedicated to women has grown since the beginning of the current municipal mandate, when it was 6.1%. In line with the desire of the government of Ada Colau to feminize the Nomenclator to “compensate for the historical oblivion of women on the map of the city”, the consistory pointed out.

During this month, the city districts will discover new plates with women’s names in three streets, two inside the Eixample block, nine squares, a garden and a passage.

Some of the women whose names will be reflected in the Gazetteer will be the editor Carmen Balcells (Sant Martí); the poet and plastic artist Felícia Fuster Viladecans; the teacher and neighborhood activist valerie powles (Sants-Montjuïc), and the first woman shot by the Franco regime in the Camp de la Bota, Carmen Claramunt Barot (Les Cortes).
