The Weeshuisweide in Coevorden is almost finished

The fences are still around the site and the last work is being done here and there, but the renovation of the Weeshuisweide in Coevorden will then be finished. Actually, the municipality hoped to complete it in August, but that did not work out.

The Weeshuisweide owes its name to the old Orphanage, which is more visible thanks to the various adjustments. For example, there is now a flower canal in front of the castle terrace, with a wooden decking path above it towards the Aleida Kramerstraat. There will be one of the four entrances to the new park. In addition, there is a theater area surrounded by upright stones for visitors to sit on, and a leafy corridor of iron gates along the edge of the greenery, parallel to the Weeshuisstraat.

The old Orphanage is also more visible, because the parking lot has disappeared and is replaced by another flower meadow with benches and play equipment for children. The first is already there: a tree trunk with branches.

“I would have loved it if it had already been finished,” admits Gert van der Kooi. As program manager Inner City at the Municipality of Coevorden, he is involved in the renewal of the center under the name Kasteelpark. The municipality focuses on the shopping streets, the Weeshuisweide and the market and harbor area. With a view to the European Cycling Championships, which will also visit Coevorden in two weeks, the city wants to show its best side.
